  • Normanton is a small town on the Norman River in North Queensland’s Gulf Savannah. Nearby Karumba is a fishing village and port. The region supports grazing, mining, fishing and tourism. Main access roads are bitumen but the area is low lying. The wetland zone between Normanton and Karumba is a good place to view waterbirds, including Brolga, Magpie Goose, Eastern Reef Egret, Black Swan and Pelican.

Sought-after species in mangroves and swampy grasslands include White-breasted Whistler, Zitting Cisticola, Arafura Fantail, Mangrove Robin and Yellow–White-eye. Mangrove Golden Whistler is occasionally spotted by the lucky visitor. Boat tours at Karumba specialise in mangrove bird species as well as Saltwater Crocodiles and spectacular sunsets.
